Peace Border for All

The Words Say it All

We at U.S. Wallcovering hope you had a wonderful holiday and we wish you a healthy, happy New Year--one that is filled with personal joy and love in a more peaceful world.  And, perhaps some Peace Border to express that thought every day all year round.  Perfect in a teenager's retreat or children's rec room--the multiple peace signs are backed with the words Love and Peace.  How very appropriate.

Peace is Possible

We all long for love and peace
In a world where war and hate cease

And people North, South, East and West
Join together to seek out the best

It is possible to get to this place
If only we agree to not always race

To be there first and not care about the others
But rather to treat all on earth as our brothers

We at U.S. Wallcovering hope you have enjoyed reading our blog and look forward to providing you with articles of wallpaper and border-related topics in 2011. When trying hard to be clever and bright

So we at U.S. Wallcovering wish you a year of health
Supplemented by happiness and so much wealth

Enough to buy many rolls to paper your walls
In your bathroom, bedroom, den and halls

What's New in Wallpaper

Wallpaper is undergoing a major revival in terms of colors, fibers, design and usage.  Based on interviews with representatives from some of this country's leading wallcovering manufacturers, a picture has emerged of an industry on the cusp of a significant shift.

With this posting we start a three part series devoted to the changing look of wallcovering. In the past, walls were covered with a product that was primarily paper or cellulose-based material--hence the term wallpaper.  And, the general public continues to refer to the product as wallpaper, even though over the years the materials have evolved to include a broad range of substrates that provide superior adhesion and ease of removal to say nothing of advancement in the manufacturing process itself that makes the end-product ecologically sound.  Due to the changing composition of wall products, the industry term wallcovering was coined which covers the full range of offerings.

Kristen Doyle has been in the industry for 24 years, most recently with York Wallcoverings.  As an Account Manager for York, Kris has seen the shift in wallcovering usage to include many custom designs that feature dramatic wallcovering patterns used as accent pieces to complement more traditional applications. In much the same way as the right accessory can make the outfit, the right wallpaper placed in the right spot adds dimension, warmth and excitement to any room.  In the photo below Kris is sharing some of the new dynamic York patterns.
Over a century of wallcovering expertise: The hand-30 years, Kris-24 years, Gary-55 years
When asked to talk about industry trends, Kris had this to say, "a fast growing segment is in the Room Mates line which offers self-adhesive decals and appliques".  These products are perfectly suited to children and teenagers' rooms because they are easily installed and just as easily repositioned.  Enhancing this line is York's stable of Disney characters.  York recently acquired the Disney character license and they have been introducing exciting new products based on some of the favorite Disney icons.  There are also decals of some of our leading sports teams including a full line of Ohio State symbols.

Other trends that Kris referenced include the popularity of paintable patterns.  Usually offered in standard white (it would be kind of hard to show a white on white pattern on this blog), these paintables are offered in many different textures and enable you to create a custom look without a custom price tag.  This is a perfect solution for individuals who have a very specific look in mind.

Kris also commented on the very interesting designs that are showing up in transitional patterns which blend the best of traditional and contemporary looks.  In the same vein, damasks which have always been popular, are now showing up as large scale patterns creating a traditional look in an unconventional way.  A younger audience is using dramatic new designs in unique applications--think accent piece above a fireplace mantel instead of a painting or mounted in frames or covering a wall behind a bed in lieu of a headboard.  One of my favorite application ideas is to use a mural in a half-bath.  If the room is small enough one mural would be able to wrap the entire bathroom.  A tropical beach scene or a Paris street scene could make this a standout attraction.

A really exciting addition to wallcovering is the addition of sand and glass beads to create dimensional, textural surfaces that take any room from the ordinary to the extraordinary.  Everyone is starting to re-discover wallpaper and designers are adding it to their extended line including the home maven herself,  Martha Stewart.  Outside of the USA, China, Russia and India have become primary players in the wallpaper resurgence.

Popular wallcovering colors and textures are: Spa Blue, Aqua Pear, Mineral Green, Burnished Metallics, Velvety Browns, Animal Skin patterns and cork textures.

Hop onboard the Wallpaper Express.  Whatever your design preferences, there is something for you in the vast array of wallcovering offerings.

Wallpaper is Moving Up

Wallpaper is moving up the design chain
It no longer is a homeowner's bane

With green ways of creating
And removal concerns abating

New patterns add a homey edge
That helps one their home decor hedge

Against boredom and decorating blight
Though some combos can cause a mini fright

But in the end, the result is pure charm and glee
It is not enough to let a barren wall be

Cleveland Browns Border A Big Hit

It is virtually impossible to get Cleveland Browns wallpaper border.  We were lucky enough to get our hands on a limited supply.  And, with the Browns beating the odds and playing well, demand has sky-rocketed for the border commodity.  So, we are going to feature the border yet again and hope we can rejoice in another win this coming week-end against the Jets.  GO Browns.

We will be visiting the zoo soon and capturing some images of animal wallpaper and borders next to the real thing.  So stay tuned.  Wallpaper is Back and there are some amazing designs being offered in eco-friendly materials and manufactured in a very 'green' way.  In the next few weeks we will do an entire post devoted to the eco-aspects of wallpaper.

Ode to the Cleveland Browns

Browns are great so they say
Beating their opponents in a convincing way

Why not share in their new found glory
A border in your den will tell the story

Of a Cleveland team with heart and might
Too bad those uniforms are not a pretty sight

But orange and brown speak of Midwest moxie
With lots of skill and play-making foxy

Sports Borders-Browns, Cavs, Nascar, Motorbikes

Took a week off and now I am back on track featuring some hard-to-find and much-in-demand sports borders.  This is the third in our Fall Sports Borders series.  We will resume the sports theme in the Spring. But for now, feast your eyes on these rare offerings.  The Browns border in particular is a real rarity and for Cleveland sports fans a true find.

For good measure, I also included a multi-sports border that features a football. soccer, basketball and baseball.  This border is unique in that it is a cut-out border adding even more interest to its appearance.  With the U.S.A. bidding to host a future World Cup, soccer is going to be a common theme so look for more soccer offerings in the future.

And. let's not forget the fastest rising sport of all--Nascar racing.  Check out the borders to the left and imagine how they could add the finishing touch to a den retreat or a teenager's study. A special added treat is the top border featuring classic cars of old on the European racing circuit.  Recognize those models?  Perfect for a classic car buff's lair.

Still on a sports theme, motorcycles can be raced but most often are a preferred means of alternative transportation.  These borders are as vivid as the machines themselves and I thought they were an apt choice to round out our Sports Borders Fall Series.  If you are into 'bikes' there are a number of other borders to choose from.  These are but a small sampling of what is out there.

Since I am writing from Cleveland, Ohio, I would be remiss for not making a plug for the Cavs, without LeBron, and the Browns without any standout.  May they do well enough to keep the loyal Cleveland fans coming back for more.

All in the Game

It is all in how we play
All in, come what may
Be it any of the 'b's or an 's'
At the end of the game,  say YES

We played our very best
So much better than the rest

And now we stand on the top
No one can say we were a flop

The Best Cleveland Dim Sum-The Best Cleveland Wallpaper

I know I promised a 3-part series on sports wallpaper and borders but, I was so discouraged by the Buckeye loss to the Badgers that I can't bring myself to feature another sports-related photo right now.  However, I commit to finish out the fall sports series with one more post in a few weeks at which time I will show a series of different college and pro offerings from the football field to the basketball court. After all, the Cavs will have their season opener soon in YAL (the year after LeBron) time.  So stay tuned.

But, today is about Food and Commercial Wallpaper applications.  Within the last week, Gary and I had the pleasure of a shared meal at Li Wah, one of Cleveland's best Chinese restaurants.  The owner, Donna Hom, recently visited U.S. Wallcovering to select a wallpaper for her new restaurant venture scheduled to open shortly in the Asia Plaza on Payne Avenue in Cleveland.  And, we returned the compliment by visiting Li Wah for a scrumptious meal. If you live within driving distance, it is worth the drive in order to sample some of Li Wah's truly fabulous dim sum offered on Saturday and Sunday.  The 12 chefs are kept busy creating authentic dishes that span the food gamut from subtle and sublime to fiery and exotic.  Our sampling, which included some dim sum dishes, is featured in the photo below.

Gary, Donna and me
The new restaurant, to be called E. 30th Cafe, will be opening shortly and will feature a neutral palette to match the wallpaper used in Li Wah.  Note on the photo below how the beige-sand tones serve as the perfect background for oriental art.  The wallpaper adds warmth and dimension without competing for your attention.  It is picture perfect.

A welcoming table at Li Wah
Within the wallcovering world, there is a range of products with different dimensions and specifications.  Typically, wallpaper slated for use in a commercial establishment is fire-retardent and many 'commercial' grade papers are offered in 54" widths.  Commercial grade papers are made of sturdy materials and are offered in an array of styles and colors although typically the designs are more textured in nature and feature monochromatic (single color) palettes.  The over all effect can be very soothing and lends itself to a study, a play room, a rec room or a photo gallery space.  The extra wide rolls minimize the number of seams and the durable nature of the product is perfect for covering wall imperfections.

Check out Li Wah at http://liwahrestaurant.com

Dim Sum Yum Yum

The flavor is oh so fine
Good enough for a foody plus nine

And what of the look so well
It's so perfect you could hardly tell

That on the walls there is a neutral paper base
Designed to keep you calm and not your meal race

For wallpaper and good Chinese food
Combine to create just the right mood

To send your spirits soaring high
And the compliments coming bye the bye

GO Ohio State Buckeyes

If you are an Ohio State Buckeye fan, this is your time.

Even as baseball winds down to a World Series finish, football is heating up with many college teams, including the Ohio State Buckeyes who are enjoying a 5-0 record. Although there are many football and other sports borders and decals available, this week's blog will focus on Ohio State offerings.  The Ohio State University has always been a football powerhouse drawing fans from throughout the state of Ohio and there are many borders and decals to choose from and many ways to use them.  In addition to traditional uses on your walls think of placing them on refrigerators, books, desks, a t-shirt, your car window, etc. You get the idea.  The applications are limitless.

So to whet your appetite I am featuring some of our favorite Ohio State offerings.  Check out the images and select your favorite.

The decal sheet to the right offers something for everyone--football helmets and a basketball--we call this a two-fer.

Think of THE song, Snoopy, as you view the images and think Big Ten football and 100,000 in-stadium viewers with thousands more tailgating on the stadium perimeter.  With the right application of decals or borders you could be the hit of the crowd.  Be creative and send your most inventive pictures to uswallcoveirng@yahoo.com.  We promise to post them on our blog.
Some fun logo examples are featured to the left.

Let me know if you would like to see more Ohio State materials.  There are at least five different Ohio State borders available.  You can check them out at uswallcoveringonline.com.  And, while we're on the subject of sports team borders, it is hard to believe,  but there is not a border available for the Cleveland Browns. So, if you would like to see one manufactured, just drop us a note at uswallcovering@yahoo.com.  We will then use the response to encourage manufacturers to produce a Browns border.

We had so many requests for information about who we are that we updated our About Us page.  Click Here to be taken directly to the page where you can check out our handsome owner and learn about Ohio's most complete wallpaper store.

Ohio State Buckeye Blast

It's time for the Buckeye blast
Fasten your seat belts and hold on fast

Ohio's favorite team is now rated #2
But they are the best no matter what they do

Poised and ready for yet another BCS run
They won't rest until their work is done

And, they sit on top of the #1 throne
They are not content with just any other bone

GAME ON

It is that time of year---Sports Time.  We've been promising some photos about your favorite sports teams and this is Round 1in what will be a 3 part-series on sporting teams.  Today we feature the Cleveland Indians as they just played their last at-home game of the season.  Though they have struggled off and on the field and have failed to reclaim the glory of the magical 90's they did end on a high note having won their last six games.  We can only hope this will lead into a strong 2011 start.  We have a phenomenal closer in Perez; we just need some strong starters.  The symbol of the Indians is Chief Wahoo and the photo below shows a copy of a Wahoo Fathead.  U.S. Wallcovering is the only source for this mural and the supplies are going quickly.  Wahoo Fathead is shown above a Wahoo blanket.  The ratios in the photo are a little distorted--the Fathead is actually four feet high.

Cleveland Indians fans range in age from the very young to the somewhat older.  The pictures below attest to that.

The first picture is of P.W. from Cleveland, OH.  He has a room covered with Indians logos and pictures and signed baseballs and bats and he recently stopped by the U.S. Wallcovering store to add to his collection.  He found some Wahoo Border and let slip that "This Border's going up despite my  wife's wishes".  Well, Mrs. W., we hope you are not too upset and we hope Mr. W. is enjoying his most recent Indians merchandise.

On the right P.W. of Cleveland, OH shows off his latest Indians' purchase--several rolls of Indians' Border.  He was wearing his Indians' hat and was properly color-coordinated with his shirt.  When he saw the Wahoo Fathead featured in the picture above he was going to go home and measure to see if there was any available space.  We have not seen him back in the store so I guess he couldn't make it fit.

Although we are featuring Indians' related materials in this week's Blog, we have a full range of products representing many sports teams and are capable of obtaining wallpapers and borders for just about any sports team in the nation.

And, in Houston, Texas, there is a ten-year old Little Leaguer who has developed a strong passion for the Indians as well.

Noah's dad surprised him recently with a Red-White-Blue painted room with Wahoo Border above the chair-rail.  Complete with Wahoo blankets on the bunk beds, Indian's pennants and pictures, an Indians' rug on the floor, an Indians' alarm clock-radio, Indians' calendar and a huge Wahoo Fathead, this room is all about one of Cleveland's favorite teams.

There must be other Indians' fans out there who would like to share their special sports rooms so save up those digital photos and send them our way for inclusion in a future Blog come Spring Training time.

In the meantime, let's make the transition to football.
Our Blog next week will feature a large selection of Ohio State Buckeyes' wall offerings from Fatheads to Borders and beyond.  So, make sure you tune in to 'For the Love of Wallpaper' next Thursday.

Take Me Out To the Ballgame

Take me out to the ballgame is a famous song
Not too short and not too long

Just the perfect length with words so right
We can only hope the Indians will be all fight

Come next spring will be the season to win
So parents can take their next of kin

To games with many a grand slam
And not too many fans to say oh damn

Cleveland Unique Wallpaper Looks

Wallcovering offers an infinite number of unique design opportunities.   We are hearing from our customers that they would like to see specific examples of wallcovering used in creative ways to accomplish a design objective, so moving forward each blog will contain at least one picture of a special use of wallcovering.

The image below is of a Dining Room in a lakeside high-rise in Cleveland Ohio where a small space
has been transformed through the application of three wallpaper images representing a window to a European-inspired landscape.  The ceiling is a wallcovering of a cloud pattern.  And, the walls are covered in a textured wallcovering that beautifully replicates old-world stucco.

The objective of creating an intimate dining setting that is straight out of the Tuscan hills is further enhanced through the careful selection of window and lighting treatments.

Make sure you check out next week's blog where we will feature sports-themed papers and borders to satisfy every fan's favorite teams. Entitled 'Game On' this blog will focus on Cleveland-area sports franchises but future blogs will be tied to major sporting events throughout the nation.

Poem of the Week

Wallcovering comes in different forms
Not all of which meet standard norms

A window here a door there
You can cover a surface that is now bare

With images that evoke time and place
Offering an alternative view of any space

So check out the photo on this page
What you see is a new wallcovering rage

Wallpaper is Back....So What?

Whether reading the latest design publication or viewing a television morning show interview with a famous interior designer, all indications are that Wallpaper is Back.  Well, So What?  The So What is the chance for YOU to do it your way or stated another way, Mi Whey.  No curdles with this whey--just the chance for YOU to design the most amazing room based on YOUR whim and fancy.  You can convert a digital photo of a sublime sunset or a dramatic climbing pitch or a serene seascape or a redwood forest or a favorite person or place or thing into your own personal mural or wallcovering pattern.  All it takes is the courage to try it.

And, if you're not yet ready to take the full plunge there are interim steps that can give you the feel for unleashing your inner creativity. Now that Wallpaper (or Wallcovering as it is commonly referred to by industry gurus) is Back, wallpaper/wallcovering designers are back at it--conjuring up the most amazing new patterns to grace your walls.  And some of those patterns come in small packages--individual decals of flowers, animals, trees, famous personalities, sports figures--all to apply to a wall or a ceiling or a dresser or a book or a cupboard or a refrigerator et al.  A future Blog will show some interesting applications for Wallpaper and Borders but for now just consider all the ways in which you can take the newly issued patterns and make them your own.
Some examples of individual decals

Another feature of the new Wallpaper industry is a commitment to producing the most ecologically sound products, ones that are toxin-free and utilize sustainable resources.  If you are driven by green, then wallcovering is your product.
The selection of grassscloths, seagrasses, and other very natural fibers in today's wallcovering is impressive and infinite.   Offered in varying textures, colors, fibers and density these materials work well in any room in your home and complement any decorating style.  Try classic taupe for a study, seafoam green for a bathroom, vibrant blue for a bedroom or dramatic red for a kitchen.  Your walls will reflect your concern with the environment.

And now are you ready for the comparison test?  Look at these two pictures using the same accessories--one against a white wall background and one against a wallpapered wall.  Which is your favorite?

Poem for the Week:

Wallpaper is back...so what
Now there are designs that are so hot

From glow-in-the-dark decals and things
To animals and dots and birds with wings

You have the change to engage in a new direction
One that provides the tools for a new design erection

Of a look that adds warmth and wow
Be prepared to take a well deserved bow

Google Visits US Wallcovering

Welcome to U.S. Wallcovering’s first ever Blog. We have been in business 105 years and Gary Levine, the current Owner, is the third generation Levine to head the operation. Here’s a picture of Gary describing his wallpaper hanging technique to an interested customer. Gary has made hanging paper as easy as 1-2-3 and he is sooo knowledgeable and sooo cool he has customers hanging on every word. Check him out in the photo below.
And 30 minutes later he is still demonstrating the accordion fold

We recently launched our new website, www.uswallcoveringonline.com, and we are constantly making changes in response to customer feedback. Google was impressed with the amount of traffic to our site and they offered to come to Cleveland to photograph our showroom and post the findings on their business site. Pretty impressive stuff. We thought we would give you a pre-look at what you will see on Google. Below is a virtual tour of our 7,000 square foot showroom featuring some of the 4000 patterns we have in stock. Everything from hand prints to suedes to textures to embossed patterns to foils to grasscloths and other natural materials are featured in our vast inventory. We are the only wallpaper store in the Cleveland area with an impressive in-stock inventory. In fact, we have one of the largest on-hand wallpaper stocks of any retail store in the country. And yet, we are like Cleveland itself, a well-kept secret.

Just a small sampling of 3000 Wallpaper Patterns

And 1000 Border Patterns
We do things in a very low-key kind of way so this blog will not be all flash and dash but will be based on substance and the things that matter to you. This is a chance to tell us what is important to you and what you want to hear or learn more about relative to wallcovering. We will be updating our blog weekly with topics of serious and zany interest. Some upcoming blogs will feature Zoo Pictures matched with zoo print wallpaper patterns, a ‘Game On’ feature showcasing borders and wallpapers with a sporting theme, a guide to creating your own wallcovering pattern from a digital photo, a chance to select your favorite customer wall makeover, a wallpaper design contest, a wallpaper quiz with a Grand Prize of FREE wallcovering for an entire home and special articles written by guest writers.

Please respond to this Blog and tell us what you want to read about in future blogs. For every response we will issue a coupon worth an additional 20% off our already seriously discounted wallcovering products.

And, to make every blog unique, we will also offer a brief poem on a pertinent topic. Today’s poem is about How Wallpaper is Back.

Wallpaper is back so they say
‘Tis the dawning of a very creative way

One that offers patterns galore
To feed a hungry mass that wants still more

In order to make their homes a special place
With warmth and soul and a brand new face
